1c black postal stationery card (H&G 39) used with HABANA machine cancel dated DEC 5 1919. Addressed to FRANCE with straight line 'ACCIDENT DE SERVICE' cachet in black on front with French transit & arrival marks on front & reverse. This card was sent on the 'SS Imperator' which sailed from New York on 11th December and experienced severe storms while at sea resulting in the mail and cargo being damaged. The ship arrived at Southampton on 25th December where mail was forwarded. The 'ACCIDENT DE SERVICE' cachet being the marking applied by the French for this incident.
