Airmail cover with typed 'Remite GIUSEPPE BELLANTONIO, Estacion Migratoria, Perote, VER, MEXICO' return address on front franked with 1934 pair 20c lake and 50c green AIR issue (SG 576 & 578) tied by PEROTE cds's dated 14 NOV 1943. Addressed to the RED CROSS, GENEVA, SWITZERLAND with circular 'PODER EJECUTIVO FEDERAL MEXICO' Arms cachet and three line 'SECRETARIA DE GOBERNACION' markings in purple on reverse with printed black on white 'EXAMINED BY 318 + 494' censor label at left and censored again in transit in Germany. The cover also has transit markings of MEXICO CITY and LISBON, PORTUGAL on reverse. This cover was from one of the two Internment camps set up in Mexico in 1942. This camp was located in San Carlos Prison at Perote and housed both political prisoners and a group of German and Italian sailors who were stranded in Mexico when their ships were blockaded in Mexican ports after the war began. These internees could only communicate with their families in Europe through the International Red Cross in Geneva. Very scarce.
